How do people choose a security company? Advice from Reddit

How should you use Reddit when choosing your security provider?

Use Reddit as a prompt, then test each warning through UK checks you can verify. Ask who turns up, how officers are briefed, who supervises them, how incidents are reported and how cover continues if someone is absent. Confident comments earn attention after they become checks a provider can answer plainly.

People check Reddit because formal security company pages can sound similar. The useful comments are usually the blunt ones about contract security after it starts: missed cover, weak briefing, poor management follow-up, or an officer who simply does not suit the site.

We would use that scepticism in a disciplined way. Treat every security company red flag as a buyer question, then look for a specific answer before you sign. That is how advice from Reddit becomes useful for a Central London retail site, office building, commercial property or private residence.

Broad claims matter much less once you get close to the contract. A reliable security guard company has to explain the daily control behind the promise.

Why Reddit advice needs a UK buying filter

Reddit is useful because it shows what buyers and guards complain about after delivery starts. The same themes come up in different words: attendance, supervision, briefing, reporting and fit for the site.

Reddit is useful as a warning system, not as evidence that any one provider will perform well. We treat those comments as prompts for buyer due diligence, especially where a provider is offering manned guarding for commercial properties or private services.

The table below compares common Reddit themes with buyer checks you can put to a security provider.

Reddit theme

Buyer check

Cover varies by site

Ask who supervises the assignment and how cover is maintained

Officers are badly briefed

Ask to see how site instructions and handovers are managed

Sales claims do not match delivery

Ask what reporting, escalation and management oversight look like after deployment

Good buying starts when you turn a vague worry into something the provider has to explain.

The right company fits the site

Choosing a security company starts with the premises, because different sites need different officer behaviour. A front door, shop floor, reception desk and out-of-hours entrance all call for different judgement.

Retail security guarding has to work around customers while still giving visible deterrence and incident handling. Corporate security guarding puts more weight on access control, visitor management and reception and front-of-house security. Residential security guarding demands discretion, privacy control and a clear view of who comes and goes.

Central London and the prime commercial districts make that fit more important. A high-footfall store near Oxford Street, a corporate reception in the City and a private building in Mayfair can all need manned guarding, yet the officer profile, briefing and escalation route will differ.

We look closely at the behaviour the site needs before we judge the cover. A retail security company that works well on a busy shop floor will not automatically be the right corporate security provider for a reception desk with tenant expectations and visitor flow.

The licence checks come early

Licence checks sit at the start of the buying process. Before cover begins, we want the individual officer’s SIA licence checked against the role they will carry out, and we want any company-level approval claim checked separately.

Individual SIA licences belong to the officer

GOV.UK says the SIA register can be searched by a 16-digit SIA licence number, or by surname and other personal details such as date of birth and security role. That gives you a clear route to check SIA licence details before an officer is deployed.

Role type matters as well. GOV.UK lists categories including security guard, door supervisor, close protection operative, CCTV operator, key holder and cash and valuables transport guard. “SIA licensed” is too loose as a phrase unless the licence type matches the work being proposed.

Company-level approval claims need separate checking

At Fahrenheit Security, we prefer buyers to check licence details and approval claims directly, because clear verification protects both sides before deployment. The clean habit is simple: verify the officer’s licence and verify any separate company claim before cover begins.

Why supervision matters after the first shift

A promised shift still needs a control system behind it. Someone has to brief the officer, confirm attendance, deal with absence and decide what happens when an incident lands outside normal office hours.

The SIA buyer guide says buyers should define requirements before asking for proposals, including a risk and threat assessment, security policy and strategy, extra duties, and whether extra qualifications or training are needed. That is practical, because a weak brief leaves too much for the officer to work out alone on site.

Ask these questions before hiring a security company:

  • Who writes and updates the site instructions?

  • Who checks the officer has arrived and is fit for the assignment?

  • How is relief cover arranged if an officer is absent?

  • What is reported daily, and who receives it?

  • Who escalates incidents outside normal office hours?

The lowest quote is a weak shortcut

A low security company quote feels easy to compare because the number is clear. The problem comes when the figure hides what has been left out. Supervision time, relief cover, reporting and management oversight all cost something to run properly.

The SIA buyer guide warns against choosing security on cost alone and says very low hourly rates could indicate a breach of legal requirements and may affect insurance cover. We would read that as a buying warning: ask what the quote funds in practice before you compare security companies.

At Fahrenheit Security, we price through the work needed to keep cover controlled, including labour, supervision and continuity planning. Service type, risk level, officer requirements, site complexity, coverage hours and shift pattern all affect the proposal, so a neat number only helps when the assumptions behind it are clear.

The common misconception is that the cheapest quote is the safest commercial choice because it looks controlled on paper. The best security company is the one that can prove daily control, not the one with the most polished claim. A quote that cannot explain its cover is a risk, even when the number is easy to approve.

Questions we get asked about choosing a security company

Should you hire security guards directly for private services?

Direct hiring gives you control, but it also leaves you managing briefing, absence, supervision and continuity yourself. A contract security provider is usually the cleaner route when you want those management tasks handled as part of the service.

Are online reviews enough to judge a security provider?

Online reviews can help you spot patterns, but they cannot show how a provider will manage your site. Ask for practical answers about attendance, reporting and escalation before you rely on any public comment.

Do you need the same officer every day?

Continuity helps on sites where local knowledge matters, but the stronger test is whether the provider can maintain the brief when cover changes. A well-run handover protects the site when the regular officer is absent.

Are UK retail security officers there to stop every shoplifter?

Retail security officers support deterrence, incident reporting and safe escalation. You should expect clear behaviour around theft, threats and customer-facing situations, without assuming every incident will be physically stopped.
